Basic Stuff

  • Arrow keys- Click inside any Frame or Window and you will be able to then use your arrow keys to scroll it's contents instead of using the mouse. (Good for reading)
  • Clip board- That mythological place where things go when you 'copy' them. Whatever is placed here can be 'pasted' over and over till replaced with another copy function.
  • Selecting- Put your cursor where you want to start, hold down the 'Shift Key' then use your 'Arrow Keys' to be more exact with highlighting for 'C & P' functions.
  • Moving Things- When things pop in on you like our 'Music Skiff' in little windows, you can move them around by clicking the Title bar (across the top) holding it down and draging the window to fully expose it or what's under it.  Note: Click away from it and it will drop to your 'Choose Bar' where you can then click it later to use or close.
  • Short Cut key- On your mouse do a Right click and see what happens. Depending on where your cursor is, that pop up menu will change.  Play with it, this will turn into one of your best friends. (Left click away from it and the 'Pop-up Menu' will go away.) More on this when we get into the tag section (for inserting pictures graphics, music and the like).
  • Back Button- Up on the top left of your browser you have a back button, try a Right click (short cut) on it. Cool huh, that drop down list is where you've been with the most recent on the top. This lets you pick any one of the places you've been and jump directly back, just left click on the one you want.
  • Find Links- Ever get a confusing page open and your not sure where the links are? Start hitting the Tab key, your cursor will jump from link to link when it reaches the end of the page it starts over. If you want to take one of the links, tap enter while it's selected. (This is also a good trick to remember if your mouse breaks.)
  • Open Multiple Windows- Two ways. #1- Right Click (short cut) on a link and choose 'open in new window', it will. You will have a 'Choice Button' show up on the bottom of your screen for each page you open, then you just click the one you want to view, (this is called toggling). Good trick for picture viewing, you can look at one while you have others opening. #2- Up on the top above your back button left click File / choose new / choose window / Left click and you get another start page, and another 'Choice Button' across the bottom of your screen. This works great for monitoring a chat while looking at something else, you can just hit the button every few minutes to check back. (Don't forget to close some of these when your done with them, too many browser windows will slow everything down.
  • Open Multiple Programs- Same as above except you go to your start button and pick whatever programs you want, then 'Toggle' between them with the choice buttons. Your going to need to know this when we get into 'Copy and Paste' tags for music, pictures, and graphics, and how to capture things you like for re-use.
  • Toggle - Choice Buttons- When you start getting a bunch of these 'Choice Buttons' going You can hold down the ALT key and start taping the TAB key, your computer walks through everything that's running and gives you whatever is selected when you let go of the ALT key.  (this is another good trick if your mouse takes a holiday.)
  • Your computer locks up- We've all had this happen. So you don't have to shut your computer off and re-start ( never do that unless you have no other option because it can cause screw ups in shared applications)  do a 'Warm Boot' instead. Press down and hold the CTRL key and the ALT key then tap the DELETE key. Most Operating systems (like all Windows Operating systems) will give you a Window that shows everything that's running and highlights the one that's jammed up and gives you the option to End Task. This allows you to shut down only the trouble maker, which you can then re-open and try it again.
  • More Advanced Stuff

  • Source- Wonder what a particular font face, style or color is that your viewing, or wondered how a tag is built to make a thing happen.  Do a short cut (Right Click) inside the frame or window that it's in and choose 'View Source',  A seperate window will open with the source code (HTML) for that page, then all you have to do is find it ;-)  Note: You can also go up to the top in the View menu, choose / Source, but if it's a page with multiple frames you will only get the home frame code.
  • Captures- There's a real easy way to 'Capture' URL's (addresses) when you find something you like - 'links', 'graphics', 'pictures' and 'Music'. Right click on the object and choose 'Copy Link Location' or 'Copy Image Location' This places that URL of that object on your 'clip board' now you just go to your 'In Line Tags' file and paste it.  The importance of this will be explained more in the Tag's section.
  • Cookies- Want to know who's taking liberties with your computer. If your using MicroSoft Internet explorer- go up top and click View / choose Internet Options / choose the Advanced tab on the top of that window / Scroll down to the ! Cookies warning / click the 'radio button' next to Prompt before accepting cookies / Click OK.  If your using Netscape- go up to the top and click Edit / choose Preferences / click on the word Advanced in the left window / click in the box next to 'Warn me before accepting a cookie' / click OK.  Now whenever someone tries to get into your computer you get a warning box that let's you decide weather to Accept or Cancel their cookie.
